JOHN PHILLIP OF SKIPTON
John Phillip of Skipton Ltd
28 Newmarket Street
1929, John Phillip was established and is still very much a family concern run by Alistair and Jonathan Phillip – the 3rd generation. We were, initially, electrical engineers and whilst servicing all the mills in and around Skipton, we helped with the conversion from candle and gas to electricity in a lot of the houses in the surrounding area.
1951 saw us open our first shop, John Phillip & Son, in Gargrave (now The Dalesman Cafe) where we sold a range of domestic appliances.
1954 and we opened on Otley Street, Skipton. The business was formed into a limited company and the retailing of a larger range of electrical appliances was re-commenced after the removal of war-time restrictions, although important domestic appliances were in short supply ‘on ration’ and subject to a customer waiting list. Imagine explaining that one today with 24-7 opening hours and same day delivery expectations!!
1957, due to continued growth – the dwelling house, land and surgery buildings of the late Dr Robinson at 28 Newmarket Street, Skipton were purchased and converted into an electrical showroom, together with excellent workshops and offices – plus private parking for customers (which is a blessing today).
Since then we have forged ahead selling, renting and servicing both ‘brown’ goods which by definition includes televisions, hi-fi systems, radios and recording devices together with ‘white’ goods such as fridges, freezers, laundry equipment and small domestic appliances.
TODAY, we are still offering a fantastic range of appliances and equipment, we have seen the advance of technology race off the scale and now also offer a range of personal MP3 players, laptop computers, tablets and electronic readers.
We have various showrooms within the building displaying a superb range of audio and video equipment and domestic appliances.
We often wonder why customers trail around the ‘sheds’ or purchase on-line when we offer superb in-house sales support. We have a no-pressure policy of selling and listen to your needs and wants and then tailor the equipment to suit you. John Phillip competes locally, against the retail park ‘giants’ and offer great household names on your doorstep, with relaxed, competent after-sales support – whether it is simple understanding of your new remote control to the more complexities of your system.
